VERA20k: Red Alert 2:Yuri's Revenge, rebuilt in Rust
A free, open-source rewrite of the original engine. The same gameplay, visuals and atmosphere, aiming for battles of up to 30 players and 20,000 units.
You'll need your own copy of Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge.
About
VERA20k is a rewrite of the original engine, gamemd.exe, in Rust. It uses the original game files, so you'll need your own copy of the game. It's made by gamers, for gamers, and gamers have the final say in where it goes.
Goals
- Keep the gameplay, visuals and atmosphere of Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge.
- Support bigger battles: up to 30 players and 20,000 units on 500×500 maps.
- Add known RTS features, old and new, and some never seen before.
- Build in a multiplayer client.
Most of the code is written by AI coding agents. They use Ghidra to study the original engine, then port its behavior to Rust and check it with comparison tools and playtesting.
Status
Mid development. Local skirmish is playable on Windows against a basic AI, and VERA20k has also been played on Linux and macOS.
In place
- Retail and random maps
- Menus
- Base building and harvesting
- Combat
- Save and load
Not yet
- Multiplayer
- Campaigns
- The original AI
- 30-player, 20,000-unit battles
Aircraft, mind control, bridges and several weapons and effects need more work. See the latest changes on GitHub.
Play
There's no installer yet. You need the game, current stable Rust and Git, your platform's C++ build tools, and a GPU with Vulkan, DirectX 12 or Metal. Then:
git clone https://github.com/YuriPlanet/vera20k.git
cd vera20k
cp config.toml.example config.toml
# set ra2_dir to your game folder, like C:/Games/RA2
cargo run --release --bin vera20k
Use --release to play; debug builds are too slow. The README has the details for each platform.
